Alveolus
“Alveolus, 폐포” is a series born from exploring the essential beauty and importance of breathing. It looks closely at this act of life that we repeat without thinking, and highlights the delicacy and preciousness of life within it.
The pulmonary alveolus, the smallest unit of breath, is the place where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged, playing a central role in life. These works use the natural spreading of paint to visualize the rhythm of breathing — the flow and connection of breath itself. Branch-like lines recall alveoli and alveolar ducts, while round shapes symbolize the basic units of breath. Together, these forms metaphorically express the complex process of breathing in the lungs, while also showing the necessity and harmony of this act that usually escapes our awareness.
The works approach breath through four views: “inhalation,” “exhalation,” “many frames,” and “one frame.” Inhalationrepresents receiving new energy and expanding the possibilities of life. Exhalation is the release of condensed feelings and memories to the outside. Many frames show the environment around me and the different identities within; each frame looks separate but they hold each other’s boundaries and form bonds.
One frame gathers everything into a compressed universe that contains the whole of life, where every inhale and exhale unfolds. The gentle spreading of paint from the center breaks down borders, resembling the shape of alveoli and expressing the subtle exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in each breath. This goes beyond the physical act, carrying a wish to let go of the old, to expand the self, and to move beyond limits toward an infinite openness.
The contrast of black and white stresses the pure and essential role of breathing, making the flow of life more direct. By turning our gaze to this unnoticed rhythm, the works invite reflection on the detail and wonder of life. In the most basic act of breathing, may we discover the endless possibilities and beauty of existence.

‘Alveolus, 폐포’ 시리즈는 호흡의 본질적인 아름다움과 중요성을 탐구하는 과정에서 탄생한 작업입니다. 우리가 무심코 반복하는 호흡이라는 생명 활동을 깊이 들여다보고, 그 속에서 삶의 섬세함과 소중함을 조명합니다.
호흡의 가장 작은 단위인 폐포(Pulmonary Alveolus)는 산소와 이산화탄소가 교환되는 공간으로, 생명의 핵심적인 역할을 합니다. 이 작업은 물감의 자연스러운 번짐 효과를 활용하여 호흡의 리듬, 즉 숨결의 유동성과 연결성을 시각화합니다. 가지 형태의 선들은 폐포와 폐포관(alveolar ducts)을 연상시키며, 둥근 형체는 호흡의 기본 단위를 상징합니다. 이러한 연결된 구조는 폐에서 일어나는 복잡한 호흡 과정을 은유적으로 표현하는 동시에, 우리가 의식하지 못하는 호흡의 필수성과 조화로움을 강조합니다.
작업은 ‘들숨’, ‘날숨’, 그리고 ‘여러 개의 틀’과 ‘하나의 틀’이라는 네 가지 관점을 통해 호흡을 탐구합니다. ‘들숨’은 새로운 에너지를 받아들이고 삶의 가능성을 확장하는 과정으로, ‘날숨’은 내면에 응축된 감정과 기억을 외부로 풀어내는 과정으로 해석됩니다. ‘여러 개의 틀’은 나를 둘러싼 환경과 내면의 다양한 정체성을 표현하며, 각 틀은 단절된 듯 보이지만 서로의 경계를 지탱하며 유대감을 형성합니다.
‘하나의 틀’에서 집중된 시선은 삶의 전체를 담아내는 압축된 우주와도 같으며, 그 속에서 들숨과 날숨의 모든 과정이 펼쳐집니다. 틀의 경계를 허물고 중심에서 부드럽게 퍼져나가는 물감의 번짐은 폐포의 형태와도 유사하며, 숨을 들이쉬고 내쉬는 찰나에 이루어지는 산소와 이산화탄소의 교환이라는 섬세한 과정을 표현합니다. 이는 단순한 물리적 행위를 넘어, 묵은 것들을 놓아주고, 응축된 자아를 확장하며, 삶의 제한과 틀을 벗어나 무한히 확장되는 소망을 담고 있습니다.
흑백의 대비는 호흡의 본질적이고 순수한 역할을 강조하며, 생명의 흐름을 더욱 직관적으로 보여줍니다. 우리가 무심코 반복하는 호흡을 예술적 시각으로 재조명하며, 생명의 정교함과 경이로움을 성찰하는 계기를 제공합니다. ‘Breath, 숨’이라는 가장 기초적인 생명 활동 속에서 삶의 무한한 가능성과 아름다움을 발견하는 경험이 되기를 바랍니다.
