Leaf – Materials is a project that focuses on gold and silver leaf among traditional painting materials, presenting the traditional method of attaching them to hanji with natural glue in front of a contemporary audience.

Based on the artist’s personal practice, the project reinterprets techniques that have been used not only in painting, but also in traditional architecture, Buddhist paintings, and decorative arts. As thin metal is placed onto paper and changes with light and air, gold and silver are rediscovered not as decoration, but as materials.

The project extends beyond the studio through workshops and educational programs at places such as Bukchon Hanji Gahyeon and KIA workshops. Participants place gold and silver leaf using glue and adhesives, experiencing traditional techniques through their hands. Through this process, the artist brings traditional painting materials and methods into everyday life, opening them as a material language that anyone can approach.

Leaf – Materials는 전통 회화 안료 중에서도 금박과 은박에 주목하여, 천연 아교로 한지에 부착하는 전통 방식을 현재의 공간과 관객 앞에 다시 펼쳐 보이는 프로젝트이다.

작가는 개인 작업을 기반으로, 회화는 물론 전통 건축과 불화, 단청 등 다양한 영역에서 사용되어 온 금박·은박 기법을 동시대적으로 번역한다. 얇은 금속이 종이 위에 얹히고, 빛과 호흡에 따라 표정을 바꾸는 과정을 통해, 금과 은은 장식이 아닌 하나의 재료, 하나의 물질로 다시 인식된다.

이 프로젝트는 작업실에 머무르지 않고, 북촌 한지가헌, KIA 자동차 워크숍 등 다양한 교육 프로그램과 워크숍으로 확장되었다. 참여자들은 직접 아교와 접착제를 이용해 금박과 은박을 올리며, 전통 회화 기법을 손의 감각으로 경험한다. 이를 통해 작가는 전통 회화 재료와 기법을 전문 영역에 머무르게 두지 않고, 동시대의 일상 속으로 가져와 누구나 접근 가능한 재료의 언어로 다시 연결하고자 한다.
