Performance – Materials is a performance-based exhibition that brings traditional East Asian painting materials to the center of the space.

The artist takes traditional pigments out of the studio and art shops, inviting the audience to see, touch, smell, and experience how the materials change.

In the performance, the artist grinds pigments, mixes them, and adds water and glue, showing the traditional process in which powder becomes color and color becomes paint. Instead of focusing on a finished painting, the audience witnesses the time before painting — the texture of the powder, the thickness of the water, and the moment when color begins to spread.

This work grows out of the artist’s long-term study of traditional materials through training in East Asian painting. It is an attempt to bring back the pigments used in old paintings and to look at materials not just as tools, but as meaningful beings in themselves.

This performance also connects to the vision of BoSo, a “collectable museum of East Asian painting materials,” and marks an early step in expanding traditional materials into experiences of viewing, using, recording, and remembering.

Performance – Materials는 동양 전통 회화 재료를 하나의 ‘행위하는 대상’으로 드러내는 퍼포먼스 형식의 전시이다.

작가는 화방과 작업실 안에 머물러 있던 전통 안료를 전시장 한가운데로 옮겨와, 관람객이 직접 보고, 만지고, 냄새 맡고, 재료의 상태 변화를 경험하도록 연다.

이 퍼포먼스에서 작가는 안료를 갈고, 개고, 물과 아교를 더하며, 가루가 색이 되고 색이 물감이 되는 전통적 제작 과정을 몸의 리듬으로 수행한다. 관람객은 완성된 회화가 아닌, 회화 이전에 존재하는 재료의 시간 — 가루의 입자, 물의 농도, 색이 스며드는 순간 — 을 목격하게 된다.

이 작업은 작가가 동양화를 전공하며 축적해온 재료 연구를 바탕으로, 우리의 옛 그림 속에 사용되었던 채색 재료들을 하나씩 다시 호명하는 시도이자, 재료를 단순한 도구가 아닌 ‘존재 자체로 의미를 지닌 대상’으로 바라보려는 태도에서 출발한다.

이는 이후 BoSo가 지향하는 ‘소장 가능한 동양화 재료의 미술관’이라는 개념과도 맞닿아 있으며, 전통 회화 재료를 감상과 사용, 기록과 경험의 영역으로 확장시키는 초기 퍼포먼스 작업이다.
