Hwaran Cho
Biography
Hwaran Cho is a painter who studied Korean painting at university. Her work is shaped by a close understanding of materials and an interest in breathing. Her Alveolus series began during a residency in Leipzig in 2024. Starting with the resemblance between grapes and the air sacs in the lungs, she has continued to explore the movement of breath. In her watercolours, she records how water and pigment gather and spread across paper. In her oil paintings, she recreates this diffusion and transparency by repeatedly applying thin layers with a dry brush on cotton canvas. The air and seasons of each place inform her handling of materials and the way her paintings take shape.
Forms resembling alveoli and subtle shifts in colour hold traces of her changing physical and emotional state, as well as the rhythm of her surroundings. Cho has presented her work in Korea and abroad. Her paintings invite viewers to look again at the breath we take without thinking and to recognise the quiet beauty and wonder of life within it.
